Shadow report on the state of gender equality in the Czech Republic 2016 – 2020

30. 6. 2021

The Shadow Report is a joint effort undertaken by women active in a number of organizations addressing the various issues discussed therein, both as researchers and professionals, and as such presents a comprehensive analytical perspective from directly within the field. Its aim is to provide a survey of the shifts in gender equality within the Czech Republic over the past five years. The report is produced periodically thanks to the initiative of NGOs responding to the review of the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women[1] and offers an independent view of the state of gender equality in the Czech Republic. The last national review of discrimination against women in the Czech Republic was conducted in the spring of 2016, with the participation of members of the Czech Women’s Lobby.[2] Since then, the organizers of the project have continuously worked to improve the situation in the Czech Republic, and along with others to strengthen the rights and position of women in society.

The report reflects on the implementation of individual articles of the Convention, but is structured thematically – the chapter headings refer to the relevant articles of the Convention. The individual chapters provide a brief perspective on a specific social issue, supported by data and facts or the lived experience of those organizations working with the target group of women, and assess the progress made since 2016. At the end of each chapter we also present recommendations – measures to be introduced or strengthened – in order to help eliminate discrimination against women in that area.

Not all areas of gender equality are covered in the shadow report, compared for example to the 2015 report. Nor do we have the ambition to cover all of the various topics in an exhaustive way – our aim was instead to evaluate in particular those topics that draw on the expertise of our member organizations, and to offer an overview of insight derived from practice that might not be contained in other comprehensive publications.
